After learning his lesson the hard way at Norwich City, Daniel Farke has stated what he believes is required if Leeds United get promoted from the Championship this season.

If Leeds United is to gain promotion and stay in the Premier League, a significant amount of money will need to be spent on contract renewals and recruitment. In hindsight, Daniel Farke has made it apparent what 49ers Enterprises must do in the event that the team is freed from the EFL’s constraints in May.
The German led Norwich City to two of the previous five Championship crowns, and when he decided to return to the English second division for a fourth season last summer, there were some questions. Farke joined at Elland Road with the intention of taking another shot at the top flight, even if he has nothing more to prove at this point.
Today’s message to Elland Road’s board and chairman Paraag Marathe could not have been more explicit. If Leeds is promoted, they will have to make significant spending cuts if they want to stay in the Premier League.
When promotion was essentially the only option for aspirational teams in the second division, Farke was questioned about the significance of the Championship title to team owners.
“The most important topic is promotion; that’s the basic target,” he stated. Lifting some cutlery is pleasant. Thank God I have this emotion since it’s a really prestigious cup and a very classic league.
“It is the same and you will play in the Premier League the next season if you win the league or get promoted through the play-offs. This is precisely what we desired.
After winning two championships with the Canaries, the 47-year-old finished in 20th position, which led to his dismissal in November 2021 as the Norfolk team once more struggled at the top of the league. Farke brought up today the difference in spending between Aston Villa, the play-off winners, and Norwich, the champions, following their promotions in 2019.
He said, “Winning the title also doesn’t help in the following season.” “I still recall receiving my first promotion from Norwich. With, I don’t know, 94 points, a club record, and over 100 goals, we [were] elevated to the status of champions, and we were permitted to raise the trophy and silverware in front of everyone.
After we were promoted to the Premier League, we made the decision to atone for our previous transgressions by not investing in the team’s facilities or extending their contracts. As a result, we lacked the funds to strengthen the team and support us in the upcoming campaign.
“Aston Villa utilised the play-offs this season to return to the big time, to the
Premier League calibre. They certainly lost out on more points and had to go through the play-offs, but they were still able to spend £40 million in the winter and £150 million in the summer.
On the final gameday, they managed to retain their Premier League standing. Goal-line technology was used to reject a goal against Sheffield United during this season.
United look well-placed to reach the play-offs at a bare minimum this season, but at the other end of the scale, the league title is not out of reach, especially if they beat Leicester City on Friday night. Ultimately, Farke does not believe it matters how Leeds get there, as long as they get there.
“So, although they (Villa) were just using the play-offs, they had a better advantage to stay in this league because they were able to improve the squad,” he said. “So the title didn’t help us the next season, but, yes, it’s nice to have something in the cupboard in the club museum.
“That’s absolutely wonderful, and it feels good to lift the trophy, but as you pointed out, the main goal is to advance, and that’s the largest goal. While it wasn’t the major emphasis, it was good to lift the trophy and savour the moment.
