Six players have signed extension deals, while four first-team players have left the team, according to Reading FC’s retained and released list.

The contracts of Femi Azeez, Michael Craig, Jeriel Dorsett, Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan, Joel Pereira, and Jayden Wareham have all had their options to be extended by one more year activated by the club.

Due to their contracts expiring, Matty Carson, Clinton Mola, Sam Hutchinson, and Nesta Guiness-Walker have all been released.

Kelvin Abrefa and Tivonge Rushesha are in discussions with the club to prolong their contracts, in the meantime.

After their loan stints with Reading ended, Tom Holmes, Dom Ballard, Zane Monlouis, and Paul Mukairu were all sent back to their parent clubs.

The under 21 and under 18 teams’ retained lists will be made public eventually, the club has confirmed.

Former Sheffield Wednesday stalwart Sam Hutchinson has been released by League One outfit Reading.

The 34-year-old is a familiar figure in South Yorkshire, having amassed over 200 appearances for the Owls across three spells. A defender also capable of operating in midfield, he was a key figure for Wednesday as they pushed for promotion to the Premier League under Carlos Carvalhal.

His most recent spell at Hillsborough came to an end two years ago and he has since been on the books of Reading. It has been a difficult time for the Royals, who have endured off-field troubles.

After being demoted from the Championship the previous season, they had to contend with point deductions in the third division. The team under Ruben Selles’ leadership placed 17th in the 2023–2024 season.

The club has released their retained list, and plans for the upcoming campaign are already taking shape. After his contract expires, Hutchinson, Matty Carson, Nesta Guinness-Walker, and Clinton Mola are free to move on.

The Royals issued the following statement in an effort to express their gratitude and best wishes to Matty, Nesta, Sam, and Clinton, who will all be leaving the team this summer after their contracts expire.

Hutchinson, who came through Chelsea’s youth ranks, first came on loan to Wednesday in 2014. After that, his transfer was finalised, and he lived in S6 for six years.

He moved to Cyprus in the summer of 2020 to settle his terms with Pafos. But in January 2021, he went back to South Yorkshire for a second stint wearing Wednesday’s blue and white uniform.
