Blackpool were linked with a swoop for the striker following his recent exit from League Two champions Stockport County. According to reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon page, they had identified him as a potential replacement for Huddersfield Town loanee Jordan Rhodes.

But now, as Chesterfield gets ready for life in the Football League under former Portsmouth, Wigan Athletic, and Ipswich Town manager Paul Cook, he has been signed by the National League promotion champions. Along with Bromley, they were promoted from the fifth tier.

The Irishman and the Seasiders had “no contact,” according to the Blackpool Gazette. After just missing out on the play-offs, Neil Critchley’s team seemed to be targeting different players up front in an attempt to make a stronger push for promotion the following year.

Blackpool transfer stance on Chesterfield recruit

Madden has been handed a two-year contract by Chesterfield and has become their second signing of the summer behind Kane Drummond from Macclesfield.

The Dublin-born man, who made one cap for the Republic of Ireland back in 2013, was a hit during his time at Stockport County and it was a surprise to see him leave the Hatters recently.

During his tenure at Edgeley Park, he scored an incredible 65 goals in 156 appearances across all competitions for the North West team, helping them get to the third tier.

Madden has also had stints with Fleetwood Town, Yeovil Town, Carlisle United, and Scunthorpe United in the past.

Although Blackpool was said to be interested, at 34 years old, he may have passed his prime and the Seasiders may need to look elsewhere for new players.

Madden stated on the Spirerites’ website that he was “buzzing to get the deal done” after joining the team. I’ve always appreciated playing against such a big club. The fans have always shown amazing support for the team.

“I knew I wanted to come and play for Paul Cook and the club as soon as he called.” He’s been an excellent manager all along. It goes without saying that I won League Two with Stockport the previous season, but who knows? Maybe we can pull it off again.

“I want to win football games because that’s what this club and management do. Football is about winning. I’m ecstatic to be here and am eager to get started.

Blackpool’s summer ahead

The fact that Blackpool did not finish in the top six during the previous season will disappoint them.

Over the next few months, once Rhodes leaves once his loan expires, they will require some attacking reinforcements. There are openings since winger Karamoko Dembele has also returned to Brest.
