After his two-season loan stay ended, James McAtee expects Sheffield United can return to the Premier League on their first try, but he hasn’t ruled out the prospect of a third in the future. Before coming back last year for his first shot at the top flight, the Manchester City kid assisted United in making it to the top division the previous season.

With McAtee’s future in doubt once more this summer, the Blades, who battled in the Premier League and managed just 16 points all season on their way back to the Championship, turned in a respectable performance with five goals and four assists. Although he has a contract with the Etihad until 2026, a number of players are ahead of him at City, who won their fourth title in a row at the weekend.

A likely destination would be Leicester City, who were interested in signing McAtee last summer before United made an attempt to get him to Bramall Lane. Leicester City is led by former No. 2 player for Pep Guardiola, Enzo Maresca. After winning the Championship, City will replace United in the Premier League the following year.

Regarding his Premier League experience, McAtee said, “It’s been tough, to be fair.” “I had trouble at first, but I eventually adjusted.” Even if the outcome didn’t work out as planned, it was still a fun experience. The Premier League moves at a significantly faster pace, which has made an impact. While I have loved several aspects of this season and the Championship, the club has generally had some unfortunate situations.

“I’d like to think I’ve matured, I’m hopefully growing up as I’m getting older. It’s been a tough experience but it’s something I’ll definitely learn from. The team is very close and they’ve looked after me, especially some of the older players. The toughest thing has been the physicality and the speed.”

McAtee, speaking after being named young player of the year for the South Yorkshire region at The Star’s Football Awards, was coy about his future plans but refused to close the door on a possible return to Bramall Lane in the future. Discussions are expected to be held this summer between McAtee’s camp and City before a decision is made whether to keep him at the Etihad or allow him to play elsewhere.

“You never know in football, do you?” the 21-year-old said. “It could be, but I can’t say anything for sure right now. Obviously I’m very close to the players and the experience of the previous season made me come back again. The club means a lot to me and I hope they do very well next year.”
