Jadel Katongo, a loanee from Peterborough United, enjoyed his time at the team despite believing he wouldn’t play much for a team aiming for promotion for four months.
Prior to the start of the previous campaign, Katongo (19) moved from Manchester City to Posh on loan. Although he has always been a centre back, he was having trouble getting into meaningful games due to the play of Josh Knight and Ronnie Edwards.

After right-back and captain Peter Kioso returned to Rotherham United at the conclusion of his loan spell, Katongo’s season really took off. He participated in EFL Trophy games and started a League One match at Blackpool in central midfield.

Katongo started playing right-back after that and was a major factor in both the team’s fourth-place result and their victory in the Wembley Trophy Final. In addition to his debut goal in a Trophy victory over Cambridge United, he scored his first Football League goal in a 3-1 victory over Stevenage at home.

“When I first arrived at the club, I was really hesitant,” Katongo acknowledged. “Because playing for Manchester City was all I had ever known, I was anxious, but the guys made me feel very welcome, and I really appreciated that.”

But I thought I would never be able to play for four months. When “PK” left, it opened the door for me, so I just sat down and got to work. I had never played right-back before, so at first it was difficult for me to get used to the position, but I think I got better as the games went on. Since I’ve always been at ease with the ball, I found it easiest when I was in possession, but overall, I just followed instructions and had fun. I appreciate the chance, and I thank the gaffer and his crew.

“My best memory is of netting my first goal. Although playing at Wembley and taking part in a promotion push was an incredible feeling, hopefully stand me in good stead for what the future holds at City, or anywhere else they send me.

“It will seem like a good season for me and the team when I look back on it in a few weeks.”

During his first loan stint, Katongo made 43 appearances, 33 of which came from the start. Next season, it’s anticipated that he will be loaned to a Championship team.
