On Wednesday night, a man was shot and killed in the Norwood neighbourhood of Birmingham.
Though the victim’s identity has not yet been confirmed by the authorities, several family members present expressed concern that the victim might be the brother of another man who was shot and killed less than a year ago.
Officers from the North Precinct responded to reports of gunfire in and around the 3200 block of North 13th Avenue North at 10:10 p.m.
Police entered the neighbourhood and discovered several shell casings there. After a little while of investigation, they discovered an unconscious man in a house’s garden.
He was declared dead by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.
According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald, not much is known.
“At this moment, our patrol officers and detectives are aware that neighbours have reported hearing gunfire,” he stated. “The victim was discovered when they searched the area.”
Fitzgerald stated, “We do have family on scene, and the family is very emotional.” “We acknowledge this, and we’re hoping to find out more about the victim so we can potentially identify the reason he was shot.”
20 to 30 evidence markers are placed on the ground by investigators. The number of guns fired was not immediately apparent.
He stated, “We do think the victim was the target.”
The man is the 58th murder in Birmingham in 2024. Five of those have been declared justified and are not considered crimes.
Including the 58 in Birmingham, there have been 81 homicides in Jefferson County overall.
