We’re turning back time in light of that. This article will go down memory lane by examining the Grecians’ performances in their previous five opening-day games.

1. August 5, 2023: Exeter City 3, Wycombe Wanderers 0
Exeter City opened 2023–24 with a dominant and convincing 3-0 victory over Wycombe Wanderers.

After just 28 seconds, Jack Aitchison’s goal put City up, and by the fourth minute, Will Aimson’s poke put them up two goals. In the last 10 minutes, James Scott injected flair as the Grecians lit up Adams Park.

After ten years, Exeter City made their EFL Sky Bet League One debut with a well-earned 1-1 draw against Lincoln City.

For the Grecians’ first League One game in ten years, 579 fans travelled more than 500 miles in the pouring rain to LNER Stadium.

Sam Nombe and Jevani Brown worked some magic to set up a lovely goal that gave Exeter their first points of the year.

Regardless of the outcome, there was a festive atmosphere as supporters came back to St James Park for the first time after a Covid-mandated hiatus of more than a year. Thrilled supporters from both clubs, many of whom had not witnessed their teams play since March 2020, crowded all four sides of the Park.

The 2021/22 season began with a moment of silence in honour of renowned manager Terry Cooper and East Devon Grecian and lifelong City supporter John Lee.

With a string of outstanding stops to limit the always dangerous Lee Angol, Cameron Dawson made a memorable debut and was rightfully named Man of the Match.

Nigel Atangana came the closest for the Grecians in the closing moments, but neither team was able to put the finishing touches on the game. Timothee Dieng, Jack Sparkes, and Matt Jay put Richard O’Donnell to the test in the away team’s goal.
