Jamie Carragher has outlined why he believes Arsenal’s defensive domination was the primary reason Liverpool lost Sunday’s match.
The Reds lost 3-1 to the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium over the weekend, reducing their lead at the top of the Premier League standings to just two points. Liverpool’s solitary goal came from an own goal by Gabriel, while the hosts scored through Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard.
Liverpool had only one shot on goal all game, which came in the 46th minute from Luis Diaz and was well saved by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. Carragher revealed why he still believes Manchester City are the league title favourites, but also offered Arsenal a “slim chance” following their victory over the Reds.
Carragher emphasized that Arsenal’s failure to allow the Reds to have any clear chances on goal was the primary reason for Jurgen Klopp’s team’s defeat. The former Liverpool defender did admit that his former club is one of the best in the league in another category.
“They [Arsenal] were better than Liverpool in all areas, but the thing that stood out to me was how strong they were defensively,” said Carragher on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “I never felt at any point in that game that Liverpool looked threatening and a goal was coming.
