They still had the chance to acquire someone like Spencer Rattler, but they repeatedly decided against it, so it made sense that they didn’t want to give up all of their assets in order to trade up.

That left them with the unimpressive duo of Aidan O’Connell and the recently signed Gardner Minshew at quarterback.

Considering how much money they paid to acquire Minshew, most people assumed he would be their backup quarterback for the 2024 campaign.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, however, has an article that contradicts this, saying that O’Connell “probably had the leg up” on Minshew to be their starting quarterback at the moment (via JPA Football).

According to the report, O’Connell had a little advantage because he is about to start his second year in the system and has been more outspoken.

It appears that Davante Adams approves of him as well, as he is “acting like a starting quarterback.”

In his first campaign, O’Connell didn’t exactly wow the crowd, but then, he wasn’t exactly primed to perform either.

It makes sense that they want to get a thorough look at the rookie quarterback to see what they can work with, as it’s never a good idea to write him off after just a few starts.

They might as well take a chance on the younger player here since they aren’t anticipated to make the playoffs this year anyhow.
