Roy Ironside, an 89-year-old goalkeeper for Barnsley, passed away.
After nearly ten years at Rotherham United, Ironside joined the Reds in 1965 and made nearly 130 appearances for the Oakwell team.
In 1968, he was a member of the team that was promoted to the third division of English football.
Ian, his son, went on to play goalkeeping professionally.
Despite his lack of success at Barnsley, he went on to play for Middlesbrough and Scarborough.
Joe, his grandson, plays for the Doncaster Rovers right now.
“Described by teammate Barry Murphy as ‘the gentle giant,’ Roy would join the Reds in July of 1965, racking up 128 appearances in goal and helping us to promotion from the fourth tier in 1968,” a Barnsley FC spokesperson stated.
“Ian, the son of Roy, started out as a goalkeeper for the Reds as well. He never made the first team here, but he did well enough to play in the Football League with teams like Middlesbrough and Scarborough.”
“While Joe, the grandson, continues to ensure that the Ironside name leaves its mark on football by playing for the Doncaster Rovers today.
“At this extremely trying time, the club’s thoughts are with the Ironside family as well as Roy’s friends and former coworkers.”
