Sam Burgess claims he was “surprised” when Hull FC was defeated on Saturday afternoon by his Warrington Wolves team. Despite a valiant comeback at the MKM Stadium, Hull was left to lament their wasted opportunities as The Wire secured victory at the last minute through a late try by Matt Dufty.

Though they had most of the good ball chances, the Black and Whites were unable to deliver the game-winning strikes. But Wire’s success was due in large part to Dufty’s quickness and a dash of class from George Williams.

At the break, Wire led 12-0, but Hull closed the gap to 18-18. But as Hull closed in on Williams’ drop-goal effort, Dufy recovered a loose ball, and the visitors won. That was plenty to scrape home.

After the game, Burgess told the media, “I’m surprised we won because we completed at 44 percent for the game, which isn’t good enough.” “I believe we made far too many mistakes—nineteen to be exact.

“Although I’m glad we earned two points, we still need to improve. We were far too careless. However, despite giving up the ball on every other set, they have managed to win a game without it, which makes me pleased of their effort in some areas.

We need to be a little more astute, but the players are doing a great job and show a lot of devotion to the squad. I’m glad we scored two points before the half.
