In his effort to clear his name in the ongoing Greece assault investigation, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has suffered another setback.
Maguire was convicted in 2020 of assaulting law enforcement officers, evading arrest, and attempting to bribe after a drunken altercation outside a Mykonos nightclub.
The United player has often stated that he did not conduct any of the offenses for which he was charged. He denied fighting with Greek cops who were attempting to break up a scuffle.
Maguire was accompanied by his brother Joe, sister Daisy, and then-fiance, Fern Hawkins. According to court records, plainclothes officers watched the United player and his family arguing with two other individuals.
The officers said Maguire mistreated them. The Englishman, on the other hand, stated that when his sister Daisy was approached by the two men and given an unknown injection, causing her to become unconscious, the situation quickly escalated.
An appeal from the Manchester United defender was expected to be heard on Wednesday, eighteen months after the case.
According to the Guardian, the 30-year-old will most likely have to wait longer to clear his name and prove his innocence. This is the outcome of the ongoing Greek lawyer strike.
“The Greek court drama that has haunted Harry Maguire is unlikely to end any time soon after the Manchester United defender learned that hopes of clearing his name over his alleged role in a Mykonos assault case will be put on hold – this time because of a lawyers’ strike in the country.”
“Maguire hoped this week to finally reverse the 21-month suspended sentence he received for his alleged role in a scuffle on the island. The 30-year-old was said to be “geared up” for Wednesday’s hearing before an appeals court judge on the Aegean island of Syros. However, due to legal action brought by the Greek lawyer’s organization over new tax policies, only emergency cases can now be heard.”
Yannis Paradisis, the prosecution lawyer, said, “The case is going to be adjourned. The strike has meant court proceedings cannot take place. We will be given a new date by the judge tomorrow.”
