Charlie McNeill, a former Manchester City and Manchester United youth graduate, has signed a permanent deal with Sheffield Wednesday.
Sheffield Wednesday’s early-season signing spree has continued, as Charlie McNeill, a former Manchester United player, is the eighth new player to join Danny Röhl’s team in front of their aspirational 2024–2025 campaign.

After spending time training with the Owls at Middlewood Road in recent months, the 20-year-old attacker, who left Old Trafford at the beginning of the month to become a free agency, saw Wednesday as his preferred date despite interest from MLS and Serie A teams. The former England youth international had finished a medical in Leeds earlier that day before joining up, according to a Tuesday night story from The Star finishing his transition at their St. George’s Park training camp among his new teammates.

The signing is the latest Wednesday move made in what has been a whirlwind kick-off to the summer. The Star understands there is yet more incoming business to be done at S6, as Röhl looks to put together a squad that he feels can challenge towards the top end of the division. Like Jamal Lowe, McNeill can play across the front three, but he comes in as an out-and-out striker option. It’s understood he is not seen as an alternative to target Ike Ugbo, who the club remain in talks to sign from French club Troyes.

McNeill was a gifted young player who was credited with 650 goals at the juvenile level. Four years ago, Manchester United paid £750,000 to get him from cross-town rivals Manchester City. He made his United debut against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, and he has EFL experience from Stevenage and Newport County loans.
