St Helens took a step forward, despite falling short against Wigan Warriors.

Coach Paul Wellens of St Helens feels his team has found their identity again following heartbreaking back-to-back losses to Salford and Castleford.

Wellens singled out teenage full-back Harry Robertson for special recognition, as he flourished on his senior debut following the decision to bench half-back Lewis Dodd and promote Jack Welsby from his usual place at the back.

“The guys are obviously upset about losing, but I think we got everything we needed from the group today in terms of mentality and how you approach big games,” Wellens remarked.
“A lot of us have been asked questions in the last several weeks, and I believe tonight’s response was ideal in terms of demonstrating the players’ dedication to helping this team succeed.

“These games are usually decided by razor-thin margins, but no one who witnessed today will doubt anyone’s effort, and that ought to serve as a model going ahead. Tonight, we reunited with our true selves.
