Incident occurred shortly after 1.30am at Ballynamona, near Kinsale

In a single car collision that happened at Ballynamona in Kinsale, County Cork, just after 1.30 am on Saturday morning, a man in his forties lost his life.

The individual, who was riding in the backseat of the vehicle, was declared deceased on the spot. His remains were taken from the scene to the Cork University Hospital mortuary, where a postmortem examination would be conducted. The deceased man was a resident of Dunderrow. At the time of the occurrence, the car contained six individuals, including him.

The man in his thirties who was operating the vehicle was taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act. Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 is the reason he is being held at a Cork Garda station.

The occupants in the car were presumably on their way home from a road bowling event.

Local detours are in place and the road at Ballynamona is closed while forensic crash investigators conduct a technical assessment later today.

Any witnesses to this collision are being urged to come forward by the GardaĆ­. We are asking any drivers who were in the Ballynamona area on Saturday morning between 1.15 and 1.45 am and may have dashcam evidence to come forward.
