Celtic transfer gets firm as Southampton answer from Russell Martin

The young Northern Ireland international has emerged as a possible loan target for the Hoops

According to Russell Martin, there’s “not a chance” Southampton will allow Shea Charles leave the team as things stand.

With an eye towards a possible loan arrangement, the Hoops are monitoring the adaptable international for Northern Ireland. Charles, 20, made 38 appearances in his first season at St Mary’s after joining from Manchester City the previous year, and he made an impression. The youthful holding midfielder, who can also play right back or central defence, has participated in all of the Saints’ preseason friendlies thus far this summer.

The young player is thought of as Flynn Downes’ backup, though, since the West Ham loanee recently made the switch to a permanent position. Matt O’Riley of the Celtics is one of Martin’s primary objectives as he looks to add more players. Furthermore, Charles won’t be let to depart unless he makes further acquisitions, the Southampton manager has threatened.
“Not a chance with the squad as it is right now,” he stated to the Daily Echo. “I believe we need some reinforcements. Ben Brereton Diaz is a good player, but if we can, we should try to get a couple more in the building before the Premier League season begins.
“Clearly, the transfer window foolishly, obnoxiously, and insanely lasts until the end of August, giving all the larger clubs a significant edge. That’s just the way things are. Thus, yes, we will bring in some individuals to evaluate the situation, although Shea performed well against Oxford United tonight.”
