This Saturday, in a challenging-looking curtain-raiser at Highbury Stadium against Charlie Adam’s Fleetwood Town, Grimsby Town kicks off their 2024–25 League Two campaign in earnest. Head coach David Artell is currently searching for appropriate reinforcements because the Mariners’ roster still seems lacking in some areas, both in terms of quantity and quality. Fans should be pleased to see that the team is showing interest in Jordan Davies, a midfielder for Wrexham.

Preseason injury setbacks have been no stranger to the Mariners; centre-back Doug Tharme and striker Danny Rose are both recovering from protracted injuries that they are only now slowly getting better from. Due to injuries, forward Rekeil Pyke and important engine room leader Curtis Thompson have also missed the majority of the summer.

Even so, manager Artell will be looking to address Grimsby’s lack of depth and options in midfield and wide areas before the transfer window closes at the end of the month. The latter has been somewhat addressed with this week’s loan signing of versatile Brighton & Hove Albion forward Luca Barrington. The former Crewe Alexandra manager has confirmed rumours on social media that he wants to sign Wrexham’s Jordan Davies, a creative playmaker. If the deal is completed successfully, it would help address one of the clear issues left over from last season’s disappointing campaign.

Having played against Davies and his teammates from Wrexham on a few occasions recently, Mariners supporters are well aware of his talent. The Welshman scored for Phil Parkinson’s team against Grimsby in the legendary 2022 play-off match between the two teams at the Racecourse Ground. They are also aware of Davies’ exceptional technical skills, and because it remains an area of weakness from the previous campaign that needs to be addressed, his inclusion would surely strengthen Artell’s team significantly.
