While investigators look into a deadly incident that happened on Tuesday, a section of Shelby County’s Interstate 65 is temporarily closed.
Around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Lowell Sibley, 70, was hit by another car while driving south on I-65 in Alabaster. The collision occurred roughly one mile to the north of Alabaster.
The Oneonta man was taken to Shelby Baptist Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, said Shelby County Coroner Lina Evans.
Sibley was driving a Nissan Frontier that was hit by a Chevrolet Blazer driven by T37-year-old Tristan M. Rose, of Maylene.
After the initial crash, the Nissan Frontier overturned multiple times.
Sibley was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash and was transported to Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster where he was pronounced shortly after arrival.
ALDOT said all I-65 southbound lanes between exit 242 in Pelham and exit 238 in Alabaster shut down at 11 a.m. Wednesday for an unknown amount of time to allow the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to investigate the fatal crash.
Traffic will detour to Highway 31.
Sivley’s death is the second fatality on I-65 in Shelby County in two days.
