Tragedy as air ambulance crash on way to horrific collision in Louth

Police, fire and ambulance crews are at the scene of the serious crash.

Three people are seriously injured following a crash on the M5 where a car lost its wheel and crashed from the southbound carriageway into the northbound. An air ambulance has landed at the scene, and all three emergency services are in attendance.

Pictures sent to DevonLive show people are out of their cars, walking on the M5 at Exeter following the serious crash. There are miles of traffic as the M5 has been completely closed to allow emergency crews to work.

Traffic was temporarily held around 2.30pm. There is currently miles of delays in both directions on the M5.

Roads and traffic monitoring site Inrix reported a serious crash on the M5 where a car lost its wheel. It said: “M5 in both directions closed, long delays due to accident investigation work from J28 A373 Honiton Road ( Cullompton / Service Area) to J29 A3015 Honiton Road (Exeter / Honiton ).

“Congestion to M5 J31 / A38 / A30 ( Okehampton turn off). Trapped traffic remains in the closure, a car on the southbound side has lost a wheel and has travelled onto the northbound carriageway.”

A spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police said: “The M5 is currently closed in both directions following collisions in both carriageways around Junction 29.

“Emergency services are in attendance and there are believed to be at least three people with serious injuries. The air ambulance will be attending the scene.

“Please avoid this area and expect significant delays in the surrounding roads. Officers will be looking to facilitate turning traffic around outside of the closure when suitable and safe to do so.”
