Regarding his team’ performance in yet another season without a postseason trip, Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington held his peace.
Washington said last week in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that the team “forgot” to sign big-league players for the 2024 campaign.
Washington said the LA Times, “We’re going to get some baseball players who know how to play. They may not be superstars.” “We neglected to add actual baseball players to the team. Not that I have anything against those folks, but they’re not major league baseball players, and they can’t help us win a championship, for sure.
Washington’s opinion was brutally honest.
Relief pitcher Robert Stephenson was the sole player to sign a multi-year contract with the Angels during the offseason; he received a three-year, $33 million deal. However, Stephenson had elbow surgery on his pitching arm, which kept him out of the game for the whole 2024 campaign.

Not to be forgotten is that Shohei Ohtani, who inked a historic $700 million, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team across town, was not able to be brought back by the Angels.
Washington said, “I don’t think the Angels will be big spenders in 2024 free agency,” to The Athletic.
“When I talk about big-time acquisitions, I mean going out and getting a pitcher that we have to pay $30 million to, or going out and getting a player that requires us to pay something like another contract like Mike Trout or Anthony Rendon,” Washington stated. “I meant that to mean that.”
The Angels have a young core in Zach Neto, Nolan Schanuel, and Logan O’Hoppe, despite missing Trout and Rendon for the majority of the season. Due to injuries and subpar play, the Angels have reportedly used 64 players this season, according to The Athletic.
