The Millers ended a run of nine straight league losses on Saturday afternoon when they managed to salvage a point against fellow relegation rivals Huddersfield Town, but the point has not brought them any closer to safety.
Leam Richardson’s team is 19 points behind Birmingham City, who are just outside the bottom three on goal differential, with eight games left in the season. If results don’t go their way, relegation could be confirmed as early as Easter Monday in their match against Millwall.
The South Yorkshire team has a history of struggling to stay in the second division for longer than a year, but after Matt Taylor led them to safety in 2022–23, supporters had some hope that United could start to play a little more consistently. Although they have reverted to their previous ways, a return to League One is expected to happen soon.
Rotherham made the right choice in appointing Leam Richardson.
Leam Richardson was the right manager for the Millers, according to FLW’s Rotherham fan analyst Tom Eyre, despite the team’s dismal performance during the Championship season.
The 44-year-old took over in December of last year when Matt Taylor was fired, having managed just one victory in their first 15 games of the season.
Despite the fact that they haven’t improved since Richardson moved to the New York Stadium, Eyre said he still sees Richardson leading the team in the years to come.
At this point, I believe Richardson was the right appointment, Tom said to Football League World.
We are in a difficult situation since we did not have any exceptional managers. It was a risky move, similar to Danny Rohl’s move to Sheffield Wednesday, but it could either work out well or disastrously fail.
Appointing Richardson was the appropriate move.
His background indicates that he is the most qualified player to lead us to success in the long term, even though they are not his players and I believe he is playing a style he doesn’t want to.
I’m considering four or five years from now rather than right now; it’s undoubtedly a path worth taking.
League One success has been demonstrated by Leam Richardson.
It appears like Rotherham United’s fate will be decided this season—not if, but when.
The Millers, who had recently frequently fluctuated between League One to the Championship, were neither promoted nor relegated for the first time in seven seasons during the previous campaign.
Though it appears that tendency will reappear this season, there is hope for what lies ahead in South Yorkshire under Richardson’s leadership.
Richardson has witnessed three promotions while serving as Paul Cook’s assistant coach, one of which was as head coach.
Even though he helped Wigan Athletic be promoted to the Championship in the 2021–2022 season, the Latics fired him 16 days after he inked a new deal.
Though they had just avoided relegation the previous season due to off-field troubles following the club’s administration and 12-point deduction, Richardson’s team played some of the most entertaining football in the division during their promotion success the year before.
After taking over a young Wigan team, the 44-year-old was able to infuse the team’s intriguing talent with experience the following season. With a successful summer of transfers, he has further demonstrated his ability to improve Rotherham’s football team.
Fans have every reason to be optimistic about Richardson’s future in the dugout, even though this season may have been disappointing. All they need to do is consider his past performance to have faith in him for the upcoming season.
