Phil Parkinson claimed his Altrincham players “answered a few question marks” after a hard-fought 1-0 win at Boreham Wood lifted them back into the play-off places and set the scene for Saturday’s massive home game with promotion rivals Gateshead.

After overcoming an early onslaught and winning three of their last four games, the Robins successfully put an end to their current losing streak thanks to a goal from Chris Conn-Clarke in the second half, his 20th of the year.

Parkinson’s sixth-place team will face a tougher test of their play-off credentials on Saturday when they take on Gateshead, who are only one point behind them with a game remaining. However, the manager of the Robins believes his team is ready to take on the challenge after a well-behaved showing in Hertfordshire.

“We have answered a few questions with this win, and I’m absolutely delighted with the outcome against a team that is particularly difficult to beat at home,” he said.

“That was the most intense attack we have encountered in the first few minutes of a game, and Ethan Ross had to make several crucial stops.

“Everyone on the crew did an excellent job. We had played such a strong first half that I felt optimistic about our chances at the half, and we had emerged as deserving winners.

“Chris contributes to a team that works very hard to deliver chances for him and for others as well. It’s not a one-man show, but every team will have a player who stands out above the rest, and for us this season, it’s Chris.

“There will be more tricky challenges ahead and even more twists and turns. To our fans, I would say don’t get carried away. Just enjoy the moment and enjoy the ride, and who knows where it will take us? We are certainly pushing for that promotion spot.”

Former Birmingham City midfielder Mitch Hancox went on as a late substitute after signing from York City, and Parkinson added: “You are talking about leadership, character and experience with Mitch – he has been there and done it.”
