Multiple promotion-winning manager Darren Ferguson has warned Peterborough United players and supporters league position will count for nothing in the final month of the League One season.

Posh have eight League One games remaining and need to close a seven-point deficit to the automatic promotion spots. However, four of those games are against teams that are now in the relegation zone. On Good Friday at 3pm, Posh take on Carlisle United, who are currently in the bottom spot.

On the final Tuesday of the regular season, Posh go to third-bottom Cheltenham Town and also face struggling Fleetwo of Town and Port Vale away from home.

If Ferguson’s team can resume their winning ways following their regrettable home loss to League One leaders Portsmouth last time out, Posh has two games in hand on Derby County, who are now in second place. This means there is a genuine opportunity for Posh to finish in the top two.

Ferguson stated, “We’re in the mix, but there will definitely be twists and turns.”

However, it would be incorrect to discount the prospects of the bottom-place teams. League rankings mean very nothing at this point in the season, as Northampton demonstrated last Saturday when they played Derby.

“ones with a lot on the line are still ones we have to play, and that makes them scary.

Our only option is to ensure that we execute at a calibre that will enable us to surpass them.

“Carlisle hasn’t been playing well lately, but they have improved as a team and begun to score goals. Their recent games have seen them score twice against Barnsley and twice against Stevenage, and their front two, Danny Butterworth and Luke Armstrong, are dangerous.

“We have to make sure we are there because they will come to us with nothing to lose.”

Hector Kyprianou, a midfield player for Posh, is suspended for the Carlisle match but will be fit to play on Easter Monday against his former team, Leyton Orient.
