Ayr United diehard admits working on new north stand project is ‘dream come true

Charlie is among an army of local contractors helping to bring the north stand development to life

Charlie Johnston, a plumbing expert, believes working on Somerset’s new north stand is a dream come true.

After 60 years of supporting United, the Ayr supporter is easily recognised as one of the most recognisable Honest Men on the terraces. Additionally, his company, Johnston & Graham, is one of the local contractors contributing to the launch of the new appearance.

Speaking yesterday, Chairman David Smith expressed his satisfaction in seeing the £3 million development—which is expected to be finished this summer—commit to work. A number of well-known figures are involved in the project.

“To be working on this is a real privilege – watching it come along is incredible,” Charlie, 69, said in an interview with the Ayrshire Post. It was fantastic to be here during Ally MacLeod’s first stint, during which the team was ranked in the top 10. However, this goes one step farther because it is permanent. The club will benefit financially from it for many years to come.

I’ve been coming to this club since I was five years old, so it goes without saying that this is the most thrilling event I’ve ever seen there. When you have fans there bouncing off those on the Somerset Road End, the atmosphere will be fantastic. It’s simply incredible, and the chairman deserves all the praise for living up to his words and providing for the supporters and the team.
