Grimsby Town took a gamble on the Championship youngster earlier

Obikwu, 20, was given the green light to leave the Sky Blues on a temporary basis for the first time in his career.

His deal at Blundell Park is due to expire at the end of this season but the Mariners should try and get him back for the next campaign.

Grimsby Town should target striker again

Obikwu’s adjustment to life in League Two was always going to be gradual. He is still quite raw and hasn’t played much senior football.

Nevertheless, David Artell has been gradually integrating him into the team since he has a tonne of potential.
He has so far made ten appearances for Grimsby and scored in back-to-back matches this month against MK Dons and Sutton United.
Although the prospect hasn’t scored in their past two games against Gillingham and Wrexham, he is accumulating a lot of game experience, which will benefit him.

He was signed by Coventry in 2021 after leaving Harefield United’s non-league team. The Trinidad and Tobago international, who has played for two countries, is highly regarded because the Sky Blues gave him his first professional contract last summer.

When Mark Robins returns from his time with the Mariners, his team will have to decide what to do with him going forward.
Since it is unlikely that he would crack the starting lineup the next term, a transfer to Grimsby would be beneficial to all sides.

By then, Obikwu will have acclimated himself to playing at the fourth level and will already be familiar with the team and manager.

Tomorrow marks the Mariners’ return to action as they travel to Barrow on the road. On Monday, they host Bradford City at home.

With eight games remaining, Artell’s team is six points above the relegation zone and currently sits in 21st position in the table.
