Ben Purrington’s sixth-minute goal against his former club was the first time Exeter had scored in the opening 15 minutes of a home league game since October 2021

Gary Caldwell, the manager of Exeter, acknowledged that his team’s draw with Charlton was a just outcome. Despite having a strong start, his squad was unable to capitalise on it in their 1-1 tie with Charlton.

Six minutes into the League One match, Ben Purrington scored against his former team, the first Exeter goal this early in a home league game since October 2021. Still, by not pursuing that lead, they absolved Charlton.

When Chuks Aneke’s header deflected off an Exeter defender, they paid a price for their choice.

With three minutes remaining, he checks Diabate and finds the net. Exeter’s situation might have become worse had Alfie May’s last-minute effort not struck the post.

“I think it was probably a fair result,” Caldwell thought to himself. Both teams may have believed they might have won, in my opinion.

“Over the course of the game, I want us to improve; I thought we had a great start to the match and that our personality, bravery, and the play patterns we had practiced all week were killing them.

“After we scored a fantastic goal, we gave up trying to take the lead. We divided the game 50/50. We were no longer composed.

We get nervous when we reveal the truth about how things are going to play out. I believe it teaches us to follow the procedure. Instead of making the game a 50/50 proposition, we must continue doing the things that put us ahead in the first place.

“We’ve won four games, but we still need to improve.”
Following the game, Nathan Jones, the manager of Charlton, had a lot to say.

“I’m just disappointed,” he said. We wouldn’t have lost the game if we had played better in the opening ten minutes, been a little more aggressive, cleared our lines a little, and took the game to them.

“We had a strong first half and had enough opportunities.” and moved the ball well but 1-0 puts a different spin on stuff.

“We came out and attacked the game in the first six or seven minutes of the second half, but the game levelled off and we didn’t look like we were going to score until I made the adjustments.”

“After that, we eventually scored the goal and kept trying to win; we should have won in the end. The fact that we have won another game, that it is a point, and that we will continue are the positives.

“We were miles away from where we have been these past several weeks, but I wanted us to be aggressive and come out of the blocks. I really want us to be aggressive in our next three home games.
