A Londonderry man allegedly drove into a pregnant lady after choking her inside his car, according to court documents.
Harry Boyle, 33, is accused of chasing and striking the woman while she attempted to flee the vehicle in the city.
Boyle, of Richmond Avenue, denies charges of attempted grievous bodily injury with intent, assault resulting in actual bodily harm, common assault, and nonfatal strangulation.
He also faces additional charges of hazardous driving, failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in harm, and driving while disqualified.
During a bail application, prosecutors stated that a member of the public saw a guy in a car run over a female in the Carnhill area on February 10th.
Later that evening, the alleged victim informed police that Boyle had punched and strangled her while driving in a Ford Fiesta at the Creggan Road junction.
In an early account in which she announced her pregnancy, the woman claimed he was driving “dead fast” with the passenger door open.
The injured party said she managed to get out of the vehicle and run away, but the applicant pursued her… and struck her with the vehicle, said the prosecutor’s office.
Police at the site discovered injuries to her knees and lower legs, as well as cuts to the back of her head and mouth.
Later that night, the woman went to Altnagelvin Hospital’s emergency room, where staff discovered she was 12 weeks pregnant.
There is no formal statement.
However, she has not filed a formal complaint, and prospective witnesses have declined to speak with investigating officers.
Boyle’s lawyer claimed there is such a “paucity” of evidence against him that the case will never be tried.
The applicant denies these allegations in the strongest terms,” counsel emphasised.
There have been a number of factual assertions but not a single one of them can be corroborated.
Despite expressing worries about the alleged victim’s pregnancy, Mr Justice McFarland suggested that admitting her original testimony as evidence could be problematic.
Police will investigate, but they can’t force her to make a statement if she declines to do so, the officer stated.
Boyle was granted bail under tight terms, including a ban on driving and drinking alcohol.
The judge also ordered, “He will be barred from the streets (near) where the injured party lives.
