The United striker was back on the pitch leading the line and got among the goals on Saturday.

Kurt Willoughby described how, upon arriving at the hospital, the doctors were left scratching their heads.

Now that he’s back on the scoresheet, the Ayr United striker is giving his own best medicine. Willoughby had severe stomach pains that sent him to the ward, where he spent two days hooked to a drip.

Despite the fact that the doctors were unable to resolve the problem, Willoughby is now back on track. Following Saturday’s 5-0 thumping that saw Arbroath formally demoted, the on-loan Oldham attacker said: “It was a bit of a struggle for a while.” When I arrived at the hospital with excruciating stomach symptoms, they initially believed that my appendix had burst.

“Thankfully that proved not to be the case, but it’s still a bit of a mystery what was actually wrong. It set me back a good bit but Saturday was the first time I felt back to my old self on the pitch.”

Ayr’s victory over the Lichties was initiated by Willoughby’s winning and converted penalty kick, which Frankie Musonda then nodded home for a second. Before the break, Anton Dowds added another penalty, and Ben Dempsey and substitute Logan Chalmers scored further goals to help United cruise through the second half.

“The gaffer has really put an emphasis on getting a clean sheet, so it was the perfect day all around,” Willoughby disclosed. The group has proven that we are capable of putting up a performance of that calibre. We must now make an effort to consider that for next week.
