“This football team lost a few key players, but it also gave us the opportunity to look ahead and see what we can do—even virtually rebuild. Because it was League One’s second season back and there were a lot of new players, this season was always going to be challenging.
We have to add players to the roster and essentially start again. The fact that we are able to accomplish all of that while still making progress, in my opinion, speaks volumes about the Football Club’s vision for the future and how we view not just “survival,” as everyone puts it, as the sort of top priority, but also how we plan to improve upon it.
“It will still be a busy summer,” Caldwell said. I believe that the constant ins and outs of modern football are merely part of its essence. However, we’re hoping that on the first day of preseason, we’ll have 13, 14, players that have played for the team in prior seasons as well as this one, so we won’t have to start over.
We had, I believe, eight or nine last season, so it’s simpler to bring new players up to speed and prepare the team for another really challenging League One season when you have a core group that knows our style of play, what we do and the culture at this football club and on the training pitch.
The club has activated a clause in the contract of defender Cheick Diabate, extending his stay until the conclusion of the 2024–2025 campaign. The 22-year-old continued to play in red and white, making 74 appearances and scoring three goals.
