He mentally and physically tortured his wife before committing the heinous crime that took her life

A life sentence has been imposed on a “coercive and controlling” husband who killed his 19-year-old wife a few months after moving to the UK from India.

At their Croydon, south London, home, 24-year-old Sahil Sharma repeatedly stabbed Mehak Sharma in the neck. He then calmly dialled 999 and said, “I have killed my wife.” He made up the story that Mehak was “responsible” for her death because she had been unfaithful to him throughout the call.

Mehak received a text from Sharma just hours earlier saying, “Come home and see what I can do to you.” Mehak was discovered unconscious and suffering from severe cuts at the Ash Tree Way residence by the police on October 29, of last year. Despite the efforts of the emergency personnel, Mehak was pronounced dead at the site.

Mehak arrived in the UK in November 2022 with a student visa, having come from a village in the Punjabi area of Gurdaspur. June 2023 saw the couple’s marriage to Sharma, who had been married since June 2022.

During Sharma’s sentencing today at Kingston Crown Court, it was revealed that he had tortured Mehak both physically and mentally during their marriage.

“While he was still in India and Mehak was in the UK, Sahil would call her repeatedly and expect her to answer every time,” stated prosecutor Julian Evans. Her spouse would abuse her for not returning his calls, and her bosses would chastise her for using the phone.
Sahil would beg Mehak to produce screenshots to confirm that she was speaking with her mother on the phone. He started to suspect her more and more, saying that she was lying to him about where she had been.
Things got real, according to Mr. Evans, when Sharma relocated to the UK to work with Mehak. “The defendant once twisted her arm, slapped her, and broke her phone,” he clarified.

“In September 2023, Mehak called her mother in a state of great distress, telling her that Sahil had grabbed her neck, making her feel as though she were feeling her veins.” According to what the court heard, Sharma intimidated Mehak, threatening to kill her mother and siblings if she reported him to the authorities.

However, records indicate that Mehak made three more calls to 999. According to Mr. Evans, “she told the operator the defendant had been torturing her on September 12, 2023.” “This was mental, not bodily, she stated.

“On October 22, she made another call to 999, stating that he

“I don’t need anything right now, but I need people to know that he was accountable if something bad happens to me later,” she said to the operator. “What wrong thing could I do to you?” the defendant was heard asking in the background.

Mehak also claimed that Sharma was “harassing” her when she phoned her mother Madhu Bala multiple times in the months before her untimely death. “Mehak and her mother had a lot of phone contact on October 29,” Mr. Evans stated. Madhu reported that her daughter was quite afraid and upset on that particular day. She had never actually sobbed to her mother before.

She had previously expressed her fear that marrying Sahil was a mistake but her optimism

On October 29, Sharma called and texted Mehak several times while she was at work, but she didn’t answer. He told her, “God will punish you because you are cheating me,” according to Mr. Evans.

“He responded, ‘Come home and see what I can do to you,’ in another text. In a string of messages, he went on, saying, “Your lie has been caught now.” my dear. “Sweetheart, I am aware of who you are with.” Now pick up the phone. “Tell me, tell me you’re a repeat customer.”

According to Mr. Evans, Mehak was afraid and requested her mother to keep the call on when she arrived home from work. “”Who are you talking to?” Sharma said, as Ms. Bala overheard. “What’s wrong?” she questioned him.

Throughout the call, he also reiterated several times that she had been unfaithful to him. Mr. Evans stated, “He said that she was accountable for her demise.” The defendant’s allegations that Mehak was having an affair are completely rejected by us. These were employed to lessen his responsibility and defame her reputation.

In addition, Mr. Evans read aloud a victim impact statement on Mehak’s mother, Ms. Bala. “Her husband, who ought to have shielded her, was the one who inflicted this harm upon her,” the woman uttered. She should have been safe in her own house, which is where he did this to her.

Mehak was characterised by Ms. Bala as “a hard-working girl” who enjoyed learning and aspired to see the globe. However, he stole these visions from

“You have made an effort to minimise your responsibility and separate yourself from your actions.” Sharma, clothed in a blue tracksuit, looked at the floor and remained expressionless while being addressed.

Once the period on detention was subtracted, Judge Plaschkes sentenced Sharma to a minimum of 14 years and 187 days in jail. She noted that although he might never be allowed to go free on parole, if he is, he will live out the rest of his days on a licence.
