Yanic Wildschut claimed it was an easy decision to join Exeter City for the 2024/25 season. The 32-year-old Surinamese international signed a short-term contract with the Grecians just after the summer transfer window closed, but his form and contribution earned him an extension until the end of the season.

Despite not playing in the final two games of the season, manager Gary Caldwell confirmed that the Dutch-born flier has been offered new terms, making him the first player to commit to the Grecians since the season ended.

It was a very easy decision for me to make,” Wildschut said after signing his new contract. “I’ve really liked my time here, especially in the second half of the season when we were doing so well, and I can’t wait to continue this next season.

I’m quite pleased to be staying another year. My son claims he does not want us to leave till the end of primary school! So I doubt Exeter will get rid of me so easy. My family like life here, and it’s a pleasant location to live. Football is the most important thing, but the family enjoys it, so it’s a plus.

Gary told me that I had to remain! We discussed my position as a player, what I can accomplish on and off the pitch, and how I can aid the younger players. He has always been good to me, from when I was at Wigan until now, and I hold him in high regard. I will always be grateful for the chances he has provided me. I can’t wait for next season now that I’ve had a full preseason and will be able to start right away.

Caldwell stated after the Grecians’ season-ending 2-1 defeat at home to Oxford United that he will speak with his out-of-contract players the next day, though certain decisions have already been taken at St James Park.
Academy graduates Alex Hartridge and Harry Kite are both departing Devon, while defender Zak Jules has been granted an extended contract to continue beyond the one-year extension City wishes to activate.

Further announcements are likely soon, with Caldwell aiming to keep the majority of his squad together following a fantastic second half of the season that saw the Grecians escape relegation danger and finish 13th.
