A hazardous motorist who killed a woman in a head-on collision has received a five-year prison sentence.
On Friday, June 10, 2022, at about 5.13pm, Iurie Ciumac, 34, was driving a silver Honda Accord along the A1303 Newmarket Road between Stow Cum Quy and Bottisham in South Cambridgeshire.
Ciumac was driving east towards Newmarket when he attempted to turn right at the Little Wilbraham Road intersection and collided with a blue Toyota Yaris driven by Holly Lucas, 24, of Newmarket.
Mrs Lucas was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ciumac, of Copsewood, Werrington, was sentenced to five years in prison on Wednesday (April 24) at Peterborough Crown Court after previously pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.
He was also suspended from driving for five years.
DC Paddy Reeve stated, “Ciumac’s dangerous driving has cruelly taken away Holly’s future, so I am relieved he is behind bars. This instance should serve as a caution to individuals to drive carefully, as the consequences are obvious.
“Our thoughts continue to be with Holly’s family and I hope this sentence gives them a little bit of closure.”
In a statement, Holly’s mother said: “Losing my lovely daughter Holly in such a pointless and tragic way has left everybody who knew and loved her in tremendous pain. Holly was a vibrant and compassionate young woman, just married, with a bright future.
“It’s taken nearly two years to get some justice and closure. We can now move on and remember Holly for her life rather than her death.”
