The North Yorkshire force is the subject of an investigation by the police watchdog after the death of a lady in Malton last week.
On April 24, Lisa Welford, 49, passed away following her extraction from the River Derwent.
One day later, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) received a referral from North Yorkshire Police.
“After a referral from North Yorkshire Police, we have begun an investigation into the prior contact the force had with a woman who was found in the River Derwent on 24 April and tragically pronounced dead in the early hours of the following day,” an IOPC spokeswoman stated on Thursday.
“On Tuesday, April 30, we launched an independent investigation. We will be examining the events leading up to her demise.
We are just getting started with our research. Our sympathies are with the woman’s friends and family, as well as everyone who was touched by her untimely passing.
