The 75-year-old manager of the Dons announced his resignation shortly after leading the team to the championship round. Chairman Dave Cormack stated the club is “at an advanced stage” in its hunt for a new manager.

Who then might be making the trip to Pittodrie to take over as manager of the Dons?

Darren Ferguson

Is it once more Fergie time at Pittodrie?

The 52-year-old, who is currently on his fourth stint as Peterborough United’s manager, is the son of Sir Alex, Aberdeen’s greatest manager.

As they pursue promotion back to the Championship, they are currently ranked fourth in English League One.

Ferguson, who has also managed Doncaster Rovers and Preston North End, has previously been connected to the Aberdeen position.

Darren Fletcher

Currently employed as Manchester United’s technical director, the former captain of Scotland is well recognised as a gifted coach.

The Telegraph revealed last week that Fletcher will be given a new role with the Red Devils that is more suited to his abilities by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

He may be a technical director, but he’s been seen on the training pitch frequently assisting Erik Ten Hag.

Michael O’Neill

The manager of Northern Ireland played with the Dons for a portion of his playing career.

After taking over for a second time as Northern Ireland’s manager in December 2022, O’Neill signed a five-and-a-half year contract extension.

Is the former Stoke City manager open to rejoining the club’s managerial staff?

Alex Neil

The 42-year-old left Stoke City in December and is currently searching for his next management position.

Neil led Hamilton Accies to the premier league in his debut season as manager in 2013, despite just being thirty-one years old at the time.

Success came next with Norwich City, as he led the Canaries through the play-offs and into the English Premier League.

After serving as Preston North End’s manager from July 2017 until March 2021, the team relocated to Sunderland in February 2022.

Prior to transferring to Stoke City in August 2022, he guided the Black Cats back to the English Championship through the play-offs. After leading the team to 22 victories in 66 games, he was fired in December 2023.

Neil would undoubtedly be taken into consideration if it turns out that he is not interested in returning to Scottish football, as was previously stated earlier this year.
