It is Australia’s shortest day of the year when they woke up. This is how you should interpret the winter solstice.

The shortest day of the year has woken up Australians, with less than 10 hours of sunshine predicted today and below-freezing temperatures predicted for the rest of the week.

Both in the northern and southern hemispheres, festivities and events are held in observance of the solstice worldwide.

It is the day with the least quantity of sunlight and the shortest day of the winter.

The Australian solstice falls on June 21.

This is its meaning.

What is the solstice of winter?

The solstice marks the time of year when Earth’s axis reaches its greatest tilt, or separation from the sun.

Senior meteorologist Angus Hines of the Bureau of Meteorology told NewsWire,  This means that sunlight hours are at a maximum in the northern hemisphere and a minimum in the southern hemisphere.
