The Celtic hero took to the dugout with the Honest Men earlier this season at Ibrox

When Scott Brown led Ayr United to a Scottish Cup match against Rangers, he always knew he would have a difficult task ahead of him.

That turned out to be the case as Philippe Clement’s team won 2-0, though despite the Honest Men’s valiant effort, it could have been more. From the day he assumed the manager’s role, Brown was certain that Clement would never field a subpar starting lineup against the Celtic legend because the supporters would never put up with it.

He does, however, giggle when he acknowledges that when Brown brought in rookies in place of Rangers’ well compensated players, there was a clear difference in quality.

“You get the job and it was already in the works, the draw had been made,” Brown stated in an interview with the Celtic State of Mind podcast. You intend to visit Ibrox. It was quite profitable for the club and very good for the budget. However, as I sit here, I’m thinking, “Yes.” They won’t use their second squad against me, I’m sure of it.

They used their best squad while doing so. However, the boys played strong defence and competition; it took them 78 minutes to get their second goal. You could sense the difference in the boys; you had to be proud of them because some of them had never played at Ibrox.

“However, Rangers were signing players for $30–40k a week. We brought on a 17-year-old for his first appearance. They brought on Lundstram and someone else, but we actually brought on two 17-year-olds. You can see the tiers there.”
