The Austrian is a top target for Barnsley as they try to replace Neill Collins.

The 53-year-old Thalhammer hasn’t played since departing from KV Oostende in the summer.

Reporter Nixon claims on his Patreon page that the Tykes are trying to persuade him to come to England, but he might have trouble obtaining a work permit in time for their match against Northampton Town this coming Saturday.

Barnsley seeks new manager
Despite being in fifth place, Barnsley’s decision to sever connections with Collins this week has drawn some criticism.

But they’ve been playing pretty badly, and with Blackpool and Lincoln City pressing hard on them, they could lose in the play-offs on the last day.

Although they have appointed Martin Devaney as interim manager, it seems they want to appoint a new permanent manager as soon as possible in order to pursue promotion to the Championship.

Prior to being hired by LASK Linz, Thalhammer oversaw the Austria Women’s team from 2011 to 2020.

He led the Austrian Bundesliga team to Europa League qualification in his little over a year there.

After that, the man from Vienna relocated to Belgium, where he briefly lived in Cercle Brugge, before relocating to Oostende in 2022.

But once they were demoted from the Pro League the previous season, he resigned.

As they are ready for their important Saturday matchup against Northampton Town, Barnsley is now being connected. They control their own destiny, and if they prevail, they will guarantee their spot in the playoffs.
