According to The Courier and the Daily Record, Charlton Athletic is reportedly up against competition from Championship team Oxford United, as well as League One teams Leyton Orient, Lincoln City, Blackpool, Wycombe Wanderers, and Bristol Rovers, for the signing of Dunfermline Athletic defender Josh Edwards.

A number of EFL clubs have expressed their admiration for the 24-year-old following an outstanding Scottish Championship campaign. In his 36 league games, the defender recorded three goals and eight assists. He was named to the PFA Scotland Championship Team of the Year as a result of his achievements.

Given that the player is reportedly approaching the end of his contract, signing him will probably cost money. This hasn’t stopped scouts from coming to evaluate a possible move, though. According to the report, Charlton wants to finalise a deal by the end of the week, but Bristol Rovers, who are eager to pass their League One rivals, will provide a fierce challenge. Additionally, it is said that Barnsley had an offer for the player turned down in January, so they were unable to sign him.

A Fresh Begining for Charlton?
Since taking over as manager of the Addicks in February of this year, Nathan Jones is beginning his first transfer window. After finishing the season in 16th place, Charlton will probably try to move up the table with some shrewd additions and more time for the Welshman to play the way he wants.

However, League One appears to be a difficult task for any team hoping to succeed, with relegated sides Birmingham, Rotherham, and Huddersfield Town all hoping to reverse their downward trajectory and return to the second tier at the first opportunity, and teams like Stockport County and Wrexham demonstrating a desire to make an impression again next season. With the addition of Jones and the resolution of most of their off-field problems, the Addicks appear to be a much more cohesive team. Given the size of the team and the management’s goals, I wouldn’t rule out them raising the stakes to contend for a playoff berth at the very least.
