BARROW Raiders head coach Paul Crarey says his side need to get the small things right to make sure they compete.

Crarey watched as a furious Wakefield Trinity team soundly defeated his team 36-0 at home over the weekend.

And he adds that they need to return to following the procedure in the next matchups.

He stated, “We have a tough month ahead where we have to build on performances, structure, and principles,” in an interview with the team’s website.

“I believe you can stick to your values, work hard, finish sets quickly, and remain formidable even after losing.

“You just need to glance at the Batley score—a 24–16 victory on the road. They went to Widnes and achieved an amazing outcome.

We must do that since they go there to grind and get stuck to the procedures.

“We think we need to play differently this week to defeat Wakefield, even if we had a great win last week against Swinton (24–10).

“You just need to be effective and take care of all the little details, which is something we didn’t do.”

Crarey didn’t take offence at losing to the league leaders, who have won each of the first 13 Championship games this season.

He did believe, nevertheless, that his team’s performance throughout the game was insufficient.

He went on, “I didn’t think we did any of them, I thought they were great, tenacious, efficient, kicked the ball well.”

“I was upset with all of things, not with the outcome, thinking that we had pushed the ball a little bit, played one from the scrum where the ball is in contact, and had balls on the floor when we are trying to move it with shape and not finding anyone.

“They are unbeatable and shouldn’t be defeated given their skill level on the pitch, but you have to observe their strengths.

“They are effective; they have players moving; Gayle adds speed whenever he wants the ball, and we must match that.”

“I felt that both sides played poorly in the first half. There were a number of incomplete sets, but they were clinical; I believe they were at 59% and we had 60–61 percent, or so.

They had three chances to score and converted three of them, including one shortly before halftime when we had quite a bit of possession off their goalline but didn’t really complete the set.

“I spoke at halftime how the quality of the completions was poor and whether we could establish a foothold in the game and put some points on, we had a chance if we were more clinical, patient, and direct. However, they scored first in the second half to put themselves ahead by 20 points, so there was still a mountain to climb.

I’m sorry that we were unable to meet the minimal requirements necessary to even be in the running with these teams.

“But even though we are playing a super team that will play in the Super League next year, it’s good that we are disappointed.”
