The former director of Barrow Raiders has died, the rugby club confirmed on Saturday.

Michael Ashton, aged 83, passed away peacefully at Abbey Meadow Nursing Home on Thursday, July 4.

He leaves behind his beloved wife Sandra, children Peter, David and Sarah, and was also a father-in-law, grandad and great-grandad.

A spokesperson from Barrow Raiders led the tributes for Mr Ashton, saying: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of lifelong loyal supporter and former director of the club, Michael Ashton.

“He looked after the finances of the club around the turn of the century and was very well respected during the period he was serving the club.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Just last year, Mr Ashton, who lived on Dalton Lane, was one of a number of people to be recognised for their contribution to the sports scene in south Cumbria.

Celebrating the ‘folk heroes’ of the local area, Barrow Raiders commended the former accountant for his devotion of several years to local rugby in many roles.

They also described him as being ‘very meticulous’ in his position while on the board of the rugby club.

Friends and family have been invited to meet for a service in honour of Mr Ashton on Tuesday, July 16 at 1pm at St Paul’s Church in Barrow.

Only family members have been asked to provide flowers with others wanting to pay tribute to his life asked to contribute donations instead if possible.

These should be sent to Dementia UK and Ataxia UK, which can be organised through the Little and Caine website.

His family took the time to share their ‘eternal’ gratitude for the workers at Furness General Hospital and Abbey Meadow nursing home for the care they provided in Michael’s last few days.
