If they can avoid relegation, Birmingham City will be “serious contenders” for the signing of seasoned defender Luke Ayling this summer, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Ayling’s contract with Leeds United is still valid until the end of the current campaign, but he has moved on loan to Middlesbrough, thus ending his time at Elland Road.

Sheffield United is among the teams expressing interest in signing him before he becomes a free agent in the summer.

Birmingham is eager to have Ayling’s experience join their team as well, but they must first stay out of League One.

It is stated that Blues will be “serious contenders” for Ayling’s signature if they manage to avoid being demoted.

If Birmingham is still in the Championship, its owners intend to make significant transfers during the summer transfer window.

The Blues have suffered as a result of their poor choice to fire John Eustace and sign Wayne Rooney, which caused them to plummet far below the Championship table.

They are currently battling to stay afloat under interim manager Gary Rowett, and they will finish the season next weekend inside the relegation zone.
