As the final day of the Championship season approaches, Birmingham City sit in the relegation zone on 47 points, third from bottom, with all sorts of scenarios possible.

One thing is clear – they have to beat Norwich, end of story. If they do, then it’s a case of what happens elsewhere.

Then, they need Plymouth (48 points) NOT to win their home game with Hull. However, even if Plymouth do win, Blues would stay up if Sheffield Wednesday (50 points) lose at Sunderland, thanks to a much better goal difference.

But, Plymouth will remain in the playoff picture if the Blues draw and the play-off-chasing Tigers lose by five goals. I’m tired and should go to bed!

Just look at the facts before someone starts assigning blame for what has gone wrong this season. After Wayne Rooney was fired in January, Blues will have had 20 games to make sure relegation was never a concern.

Wagner has given Cook permission to pursue so many other admirable goals. They’re ready to push the club towards the direction we all want it to go. That calls for a great deal of change, chief among them being the mediocrity culture.

League One has been the subject of much discussion among supporters, both favourably and unfavourably, as if it were inevitable. It is important to keep in mind that major teams like Manchester City and others have descended to the third division and risen back up.

The genuineness of Wagner and the bright future under his ownership will become evident to those who remember what it was like under Ken Weldon, the Kumar brothers, and, for the previous 12 years, Chinese control.

More work will be done to raise the playing team’s calibre to the point where success is achievable. They are the best thing to happen to the club since David Sullivan and the Gold brothers came in the door, so let’s not make them wish they had never taken it on.
