Bristol City Manager Nigel Pearson - Rogan/JMP - 03/03/2021 - Ashton Gate Stadium - Bristol, England - Bristol City v Bournemouth - Sky Bet Championship.

Since Joe Williams’ contract at Ashton Gate expires next month, the midfielder’s reputation is high around the Championship.

Joe Williams, a midfielder for Bristol City who is out of contract, is reportedly considering accepting the Robins’ offer of a new contract. According to Bristol Live, Preston North End is one of the Championship teams interested in signing him.

The four-year deal Williams signed in 2020 expires, making him a free agent next month. However, the Robins stated in their retained list earlier this month that “discussions are ongoing” and that the 27-year-old is taking his time to decide on his next move in his career.

After hamstring problems plagued his first two seasons in the West Country, the midfielder has had his most consistent season with City under Liam Manning. With a streak of outstanding performances, his 3,077 minutes on the pitch have been his most in a red and white shirt.

Williams’ reputation is well-established outside of BS3, and it’s known that Preston boss Ryan Lowe wants to bring his fellow Scouser to Deepdale since the former Everton youth product fits his description of the perfect Championship midfielder.

Although he has been offered an extension, veteran Irish midfielder Alan Browne, who has played for Preston for the past 11 seasons and made 43 appearances last season, is nearing the conclusion of his contract.

Considering Williams’ standing in the club and future relevance, City feels they have offered a reasonable offer. However, as he approaches his prime playing years, other considerations may influence his choice.
Having spent the last four years in the West Country, Williams may find the allure of returning to his home north west.

Max Bird’s arrival to City’s midfield should improve competition for the upcoming season, as Jason Knight has demonstrated his superiority in that area,

Now that he has established himself in a key role, teenager Adam Murphy may also be considered, depending on how well he plays in the preseason.

However, Williams’ departure would leave City even less experienced in the Championship and with Andy King having retired and Matty James having moved on after his contract expired.

Williams is a fierce competitor who plays on the edge all the time, making him something of an anomaly in the City team. However, Manning has seen that a major factor in Williams’ improvement has been the way he has managed his emotions.
