Bristol City legend follows David Moyes out as new boss confirmed

Rob Newman, a legend of Bristol City, left West Ham with David Moyes after the Premier League team named Julen Lopetegui as their new manager.

Ex-Robins defender Moyes agreed to step down towards the end of the previous season after five years in charge, during which they won the UEFA Conference League, their first trophy in forty-three years, and Lopetegui signed a two-year contract at the London Stadium.

After working with Manchester City for 13 years as the manager of international scouting and recruitment, Newman was brought on as the head of recruitment for the Hammers in 2021. During their three years together, Moyes and Newman were part of the City defence that won the Freight Rover Trophy at Wembley in 1986.

Notable transfer success stories that the club signed when he was in east London included Lucas Paqueta, Alphonse Areola, Edson Alvarez, Mohammed Kudus, and James Ward-Prowse. However, the club’s choice to hire Tim Steidten as Technical Director in July 2023 appeared to be the beginning of the end for Moyes and, by extension, his employees.

Newman is one of eight members of the backroom staff that have left West Ham this week. The other members include fitness coach Nick Davies, head of performance analysis Jamie Osman, first-team coaches Billy McKinlay, Kevin Nolan, John Heitinga, and Henry Newman, as well as technical advisor Alan Irvine. Newman made 483 appearances for City between 1981 and 1991, ranking seventh on the all-time list.

According to reports, Moyes has received approaches from Russian team Spartak Moscow; nevertheless, the Scot will be providing short-term commentary for the BBC while they cover the European Championships in Germany.

After leading Wolves to victory in the Premier League, Lopetegui has now joined West Ham. The Spaniard left Molineux last summer due to difficulties in the transfer market, including the inability to get Alex Scott from City, who ended up heading to Bournemouth for a fee of £25 million. Earlier in the summer, Wolves had seen two lower offers for the England Under-21 international turned down.

“I think we have a great platform,” Lopetegui stated regarding West Ham. “Obviously, I believe that the past few years have been excellent for having this foundation, but as a coach, my goal is always to get better and better, to accomplish more and bigger goals, and to uplift and develop the players.

the squad and to compete, as this is what playing football is all about. We have high hopes for this.

“We came here with the intention of creating a loud, loud noise. That’s the reason we arrived here, and we look forward to the task. Naturally, we will exert every effort to support the team and the club in reaching their goals and performing at their highest level. I promise the supporters that they will play a crucial role in all of our accomplishments.
