Rangers and Celtic have both been linked with a move for Bristol City’s Tommy Conway
Tommy Conway of Bristol City is a player that both Rangers and Celtic are interested in signing, but not until 2025.
The Daily Record claims that the two Scottish powerhouses are prepared to hold off on signing the forward until the 2025–2026 campaign, and that because of cross-border regulations, they will be able to present him with a pre-contract offer in January 2025.
Conway progressed through the Robins’ academy system and, following a strong Championship season, is now expected to play for Scotland at Euro 2024.
With 10 goals in 39 games, the 21-year-old helped Bristol City place 11th in the standings (all numbers courtesy of Fbref).
But as his contract approaches its last 12 months, questions have been raised over his future at Ashton Gate.
Rangers and Celtic’s Tommy Conway interest
According to a rumour earlier this week, Bristol City is willing to consider selling Conway this summer in order to avoid losing him for nothing the following season.
It has recently been reported, though, that Rangers and Celtic are both prepared to wait a full year to earn the player’s contract.
Any agreement to sign Conway in 2025 is anticipated to only come with compensation of about £300,000. A pre-contract agreement might be reached as early as January 2025.
The club will still be entitled a price because the player is still under 24 and has been developed by Bristol City through their academy, but it is anticipated that the agreement will only be worth £300,000 because it is a cross-border one.
Conway’s chances of signing with the Premiership teams, meanwhile, may be dashed this summer as the attacker from the Robins is reportedly interested in joining both Leicester City and Wolves.
It is unclear if the elite teams would pursue a deal this summer or if they are content to wait another year.
However, Bristol City will be entitled to a higher compensation amount if the player signs with a Premier League team as a free agent as opposed to moving to Scotland.
Tommy Conway’s Euro 2024 hopes for Scotland could increase his value
In the upcoming weeks, Conway will be trying to gain further notoriety as Steve Clarke’s Scotland team prepares to compete in Germany at Euro 2024.
Earlier this month, in a pre-tournament warm-up friendly against Finland, the young player came off the bench to play in a 2-2 tie.
On June 14, Scotland will play their first match of the competition against the host nation, Germany.
The Championship club may be hoping for a transfer this summer, and a solid performance from the Bristol City star could lead to that happening.
Bristol City will surely look to cash in on Tommy Conway this summer
Liam Manning is hurt by Conway’s departure, but it would be preferable if he departed now for a transfer fee rather than for nothing in 2025.
Now that he is approaching the last year of his contract, the player has a lot of power, therefore the team needs to make sure this doesn’t happen again in the future.
It would be a significant loss for him to sign a free transfer to Celtic or Rangers in 2025 because his value is far more than the £300,000 he could receive to relocate to Scotland the following season.
Perhaps Conway’s strong performance for Scotland at the European Championships will open up a market this summer for Premier League teams to offer their own opinions bids, as it appears that he sees his future very much away from Ashton Gate.
