Adam Mahoney’s new role of Head of Data and Analysis was revealed in February

Adam Mahoney, Bristol Rovers’ Head of Data and Analysis, has announced his departure after only four years in the post, which he took on in February as part of the club’s new recruitment structure.

Mahoney had been working in the analytical department for three and a half years, primarily on matchdays and during training, since joining the Gas from Swansea City in 2020, but was promoted to Head of Data and analytical two months ago.

George Friend also announced his retirement from playing to become the Gas’ Director of Football, while Chris Spendlove, who had been in charge of recruitment since Eddy Jennings’ departure at the end of last year, was promoted from Chief Scout to Head of Recruitment.

Mahoney wrote on X, “Yesterday was my last day at Bristol Rovers.” What a rollercoaster the last four years have been. It has been a pleasure to work with each and every player and member of staff. Bristol has been my home, and I will never forget the memories of the League 2 season’s last day.”
What this means for Rovers’ recruitment strategy for the forthcoming summer transfer window is uncertain, although the enormity of the challenge at hand has been widely recognised for some time. The Gas are expected to publish their retained list later today, which will provide a better indication of the number of players they’ll have at the start of the summer, but with six loanees and 12 players out of contract, next season’s squad is expected to look very different from the one that Rovers finished the 2023/24 season with.

Having worked up the ladder at Swansea City, Mahoney joined Rovers in March 2020 when Ben Garner was in charge before working alongside Paul Tisdale briefly and then Joey Barton, and he was part of the Scouser’s backroom staff during the League Two promotion season.

The Welshman, who was a member of Northern Ireland’s Under-21 squad, also worked in the analytical department with younger brother Lewis Mahoney, who joined Championship side Southampton in January as First-Team Set-Piece Analyst.

When Mahoney’s new position was announced in February, Rovers also advertised for a new First Team Analyst, for which applications are now closed.

Matt Taylor mentioned Mahoney in his post-match interview after Saturday’s final day defeat at Wigan Athletic, saying: “In terms of the recruitment aspect, ever since George and Chris and Adam have been in their roles, that’s been working on behind the scenes and that won’t stop and that will accelerate a little bit and then you’re just waiting on the first moment of a signature on a contract and that’s what we look forward to.”
