Burnley FC promised to assist in “identifying and prosecuting” supporters who participated in “tragedy-related gesturing and chanting” during their Saturday 1-1 draw with Manchester United.
The team has declared that it will assist the Greater Manchester Police in their inquiry of chants alleging tragedies at Old Trafford.
It comes after a video went viral on social media showing a man in the away end celebrating the Clarets’ equaliser, then cutting his throat and seemingly imitating an airliner while yelling ‘Munich’
The alleged gesture alludes to the 1958 Munich Air Disaster, in which a plane crashed at a German city’s airport, killing 23 people on board and injuring 19, among them eight Manchester United players (the Busby Babes side), three United employees, two journalists, and the co-pilot.
After Antony had opened the scoring with his first Premier League goal of the season, Zeki Amdouni calmly converted a late penalty kick to tie the score and gain a crucial point for the Clarets in yesterday’s match at Old Trafford.
This has been overshadowed, though, by Burnley’s announcement on Saturday afternoon that they were notified of “offensive footage” on social media by some of its travelling supporters.
“We are aware of offensive footage currently circulating on social media from the away end of today’s fixture at Old Trafford,” the club said in a statement on X.
Burnley Football Club has a zero-tolerance policy for gestures and chants relating to tragedies.
“We’ll keep collaborating with Manchester United, Lancashire Police, and Greater Manchester Police to find and apprehend those who are at fault.”
