Driver fights for life after A38 horror crash with lorry

The driver of an Audi has been left fighting for life after a horror crash on the A38 in the early hours. The crash involved an Audi car and a lorry at the junction of the A38 and Derby Road in Stretton, Burton-on-Trent at around 1.36am on Wednesday (July 17).

The ambulance service sent two ambulances, two paramedic officers and two East Midlands Ambulance Service Paramedics, an ambulance and the East Midlands Ambulance Service Care Team. Staffordshire Police and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended.

In total three patients were treated, with one, the Audi driver in his 20s suffering head injuries and requiring advanced life-support before being rushed to hospital. He remains fighting for his life in a ‘critical condition’.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Upon arrival, we found three patients from the car. The first, a man who was the driver. He was assessed and had sustained life-threatening injuries.

“Ambulance staff administered advanced life support and advanced trauma care to him at the scene and he was conveyed to Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham under emergency blue light conditions for further treatment.

“A further two patients who were from the HGV were assessed by East Midlands Ambulance Service and had sustained injuries not believed to be serious. One patient was conveyed to Royal Derby Hospital for further treatment by East Midlands Ambulance Service.

“The second was assessed and received self-care advice before being discharged at the scene.”
