Following his admission of drunk driving and assaulting a police officer in the Welsh capital earlier this year, a Cardiff City football player was given a driving ban.

Mahlon Romeo, 28, admitted guilt to a drunk driving charge on Cefn Coed Road in February and was given a 14-month driving suspension at Cardiff Magistrates Court on Monday.

Romeo’s breath sample revealed 58 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres. There is a 35 microgram legal limit.

Romeo was fined £4,423, forced to pay £85 in court costs, and surcharged £1,769 in addition to being banned from driving.

In addition, he entered a guilty plea to an aggravated public order violation following the discovery of his abuse of a police officer.

Romeo was fined £3,317 with a further £1,326 and directed to give the police constable £100 in reparation.

The defender received a one-month term after Cardiff City manager Erol Bulut disclosed the player had received discipline from the team. Bulut described the move as a “internal” problem but declined to provide further specifics.

Bulut elaborated: “I said at the start of the season, discipline and respect is the most important thing for me.”

Less than a week after making those remarks, Romeo was back in the starting lineup for the Championship’s final three games against Southampton, Middlesbrough, and Rotherham United.

Although they are aware of the situation, Cardiff City Football Club has chosen not to comment.
