Carlisle United boss responds to questions from fans over star

According to Mike Williamson, Jack Ellis isn’t currently getting a first-team opportunity at Carlisle United because of his “experience.”

The head coach has not included the Cumbrian defender in recent matchday squads.

Williamson, who plays wing-back and on the right side of United’s defence, has started other players since Ellis, 21, hasn’t appeared in a league game since the manager was hired in early September.

In light of Carlisle’s ongoing struggles and their use of unconventional right-wing options, several supporters have questioned why Ellis is not receiving a look-in.

The News & Star asked Williamson about this, and he responded, “The reasons are that we have a squad that has been rotating.”

“Jack has been training as hard as he possibly can.

However, it’s a challenging circumstance, and I believe that right now, the experience will help us get out of it.

Jack is really talented and has a very high ceiling. He has a positive mindset every day and needs to keep working.

Williamson mentioned experience, although the Blues have used left-sided Cameron Harper and Bournemouth attacking midfielder Dominic Sadi at right wing-back in their last two games. Sadi has limited experience in the position.

In the absence of Archie Davies, who is out due to a shoulder injury, he has turned to these options. Under Williamson, left-sided Jack Robinson has also been deployed as a right replacement.

“Again, it’s a difficult situation and there are answers [that are] hard for guys to hear,” the United manager responded when asked about this. “But I feel as though we need offensive threat and we need players that can affect the back line, and that’s why I pick the teams that I do.”

Since Williamson’s hiring, Ellis has only made one appearance, in the Bristol Street Motors loss to Wigan Athletic. He has missed the last three league games, including the 1-0 loss at Cheltenham Town on Saturday.
